“Giving is the basis of Receiving”Why is charity and giving very much prescribed by everyone? Why is it so important to give?
For this we need to understand energy – that we are all energy and energy vibrates. Like Tesla said “if you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration”. Where your attention goes energy flows.
Our body and mind and the universe are in constant and dynamic exchange, stopping the circulation of energy is like stopping the flow of blood. Whenever blood stops flowing, it begins to clot, to coagulate, to stagnate. That is why you must give and receive in order to keep wealth and affluence-or anything you want in life – circulating in your life.
Almost all festivals celebrated around the world is about giving isn’t it? Especially in the Christian faith Christmas is about bringing joy to the world by giving gifts to young and old. In fact in every religion there are festivals to honour giving.Giving depicts wealth and abundance -a reflection of how we were at one time – when we had plenty and therefore ‘giving’ as opposed to ‘taking’ was our intrinsic nature.Giving doesn’t always have to take the form of tangible items. It is more so of the energy of our spirit.
Giving brings happiness to the giver and the receiver–but only when it is given without any expectations. When we give without any attachment to either the gift or the recipient.
Every relationship is one of give and take. Giving engenders receiving, and receiving engenders giving. What goes up must come down and what goes out must come back. In the Hindu Vedanta, the saying “In every seed is the promise of thousands of forests” but the seed must not be hoarded, it must give its intelligence to the fertile ground.
Anything that is of value in life only multiplies when it is given. It is the intention behind your giving and receiving that is the most important thing. The intention is always to create happiness for the giver and receiver because happiness is life supporting and life sustaining.
The act of giving should be joyful and unconditional – if you want joy, give joy to others, if you want love, learn to give love to others, if you want attention and appreciation, learn to give attention and appreciation to others etc. In fact, the easiest way to get what you want is to help others get what they want.
You may say “but how can I give to others when at the moment I don’t have enough myself?” There are many ways of giving.
When Gautama Buddha was alive he had many visitors and anyone who came to visit him would bring gifts. Once an old lady in tettered clothes came and stood in front of the Buddha and cried saying “I am so poor I have nothing to give you”. The Buddha then replied “Its not true, you can give me a smile can’t you?”
Simple acts of kindness everyday expressed in gratitude to those around us can bring happiness and that is giving. The gifts of caring, appreciation, love and affection brings a bountiful. Even a simple good morning greeting expressed with sincerity can bring such joy to the receiver. Giving is receiving as all these comes back to you.
However, together with giving, learning to receive is equally vital. We have to be open to receive. When we feel we have everything and do not need to receive anything from anyone, we are actually shutting them off and stopping the flow of energy. When we say ‘no’ to someone who offers to get us something we may say ‘no’ to them due to many reasons but in keeping the healthy flow of energy it is vital to learn how to receive. For instance, we may consider that the gift might bring a strain on their budget or perhaps we have too many of those gifts already and did not appreciate adding on to our collection. Just imagine a friend comes and brings you a gift which she said she had specially selected for you, however after seeing it you say “oh I have so many of these but thanks anyway”. What will happen is her friend may never get another gift for her.We can graciously accept the gift, thank her for her thoughtfulness and perhaps later pass it on to someone worthy of that gift.
The act of giving can bring miraculous results. Not that we look for it or expect it. Sometimes unexpectedly you may find yourself receiving a surprise gift, something you did not imagine receiving. It may seem like a miracle but actually this is how energy works –what goes up must come down and what goes out must come back. As you continue to give you will receive.
Practicing meditation helps us to internalise and reaffirm the awareness that we are conscious energy and that energy has a frequency and vibrates. And it is important to keep our frequency high and in order.
